For no obvious reason, this quirky little poem I'd written a good many years ago now, popped into my head. I'd been waiting for a "prompt" as to what I should put out next on the blog, and this somehow seemed to be it. Didn't make any sense at first as to what possible purpose some humorous ode might have in trying to wake people up to reality, which is what this site has always been all about. But then the context in which it was to be presented dawned, and it made perfect sense - well, to me at least! I can only hope that what follows makes similar sense to you too, my friends...

This man from Bedlinog, not right in the head,
Had solemnly sworn to return from the dead;
Convinced he was destined for Hell he made plans
To dig an escape tunnel well in advance.
Not knowing how long till the date of his death,
He thought he'd best start while he still had the breath;
So swinging his pick this fanatical fella
Began the descent into Hell from his cellar.
And digging for victory day after day,
He shoveled his way through the soil and the clay;
He drove through the darkness for all he was worth,
Down into the fathomless depths of the Earth.
He knew he was nearing Hell when, below him,
He heard muffled noises of to-ing and fro-ing.
"The damned are so restless!" he whispered with dread,
"Thank goodness I won't have to stay when I'm dead!"
Then - bingo! - the bottom dropped out of his world,
And into this passage he found himself hurled.
"Well, well, I'm in Hell!" he thought, "And I'm not late!"
Then, looking around him, he saw an old mate.
"I 'ad no idea, Dai, that you was dead!
Our Megan a widow - there's awful!" he said.
Dai blinked and exclaimed, "Man, you gimme a fit!
What you doin' down here... in Taff Merthyr pit?"
